I’m not sure whether to file this under “a sign of the times” of “serves them right.”
The Safeway around the corner from my house has an ideal location; it’s in the center of a residential neighborhood of approx. 5,500 homes. It has only one other competitor (Frys) nearby, another competitor (Albertsons) on the other side of Deer Valley, and a WalMart a couple miles away. Maybe it’s a sign of the times that people are spending less money these days…
I shopped at Safeway all the time when it first opened. But after awhile, it seemed like whenever I needed one or two things on the way home, they were out of the exact item I needed. They also didn’t staff enough checkout lines, and I would have to wait for 5 or 6 people to finish before I could buy my single item. Eventually I stopped shopping there altogether; it became worth the extra 45 seconds in the car to go to Frys. Serves them right…
A long time ago I wrote a piece called “You can be right & still lose.” Unfortunately, this will leave a big, empty box in a neighborhood already trying to fill the Ace Hardware vacancy across the street. (and we already have too many health clubs around!)
Maybe this is a foreshadowing of the coming commercial real estate problems…
