I admit it; I'm a Zonie. I've been going to San Diego, at one time or another during the summer, ever since I was a little kid.
I've never liked the drive, though – it seems much longer than the drive across I-10 to LA or Orange County. First we have the detour from I-10 to I-8; a dusty 2-lane road through Gila Bend! (which is actually getting better as they expand it to 4-lanes.) Then we have the obligatory stop in Yuma, for a quick bite to eat, bathroom break, and top off the gas tank.
I've always hated the stop in Yuma, because there were only 2 main choices – Burger King or McDonalds – and I don't really enjoy either one. Not to mention they're both extremely crowded, and not at the top of my cleanliness list.
This weekend we decided to turn right instead of left at the 16th Street exit, just to see what we'd find. And we were happy.
About a quarter-mile down 16th Street is a huge outdoor mall called Yuma Palms Shopping Center, with tons of food and drink options. Everything was clean, and was not nearly as crowded as the places closer to the freeway. I'm not sure how long this center's been there, but I'm guessing not more than a year. All I know is that from now on I'm going to look forward to lunch in Yuma.
Your can't wait for his next trip to San Diego Realtor,
