Amazon moving to Goodyear, the internet retailing giant and Fortune 500 company, has agreed to lease over 500,000 square feet of warehouse space in the Goodyear Crossing Industrial Park, as reported yesterday on This is in addition to the 600,000+ square foot warehouse they already occupy in southwest Phoenix, along the Tolleson border.

Is this good news?

It's nice to have big name companies doing business in the Phoenix area. They're adding long-term jobs, they're adding short-term jobs (development), and they're adding tax revenue for these cities.

I'd be more excited, though, if we could recruit their talent, rather than just their warehouses. Highly skilled, highly educated, and highly paid employees would do more to shape the Valley's future. But maybe getting the distribution center is like getting your foot in the door, and it opens up opportunities for corporate relocation down the road.
