My new computer - a blessing and a curse

I got a new computer this week.  Well, actually I reassigned our computers to different duties around the house.

My laptop is getting close to 3 years old, and it’s gotten to the point where you can tell by the look in its eye that it’s tired and burned out.  I’m going to let him run the digital picture frame downstairs, then I’ll move the downstairs computer to Cheryl’s desk, and I’ll move her computer to my desk (this is the biggest and baddest computer, and I do the most computer work).  Seemed like an easy enough plan…

I started after the kids went to bed on Wednesday, and by midnight I had Cheryl’s new system up and running – was an almost transparent switch for her.  I spent all day yesterday setting up the new machine at my desk – installing applications and changing settings, etc.  I’ve spent another 4 hours on this project so far today, learning little bits of information along the way, such as:

My phone (a Treo 700p) does not synch with Windows XP media edition.  (I learned this after 3 hours on the phone with Verizon and Palm).

Microsoft Word 07 does not publish blogs using Windows XP media edition.  (at least, I think that’s the problem..  this one’s still unresolved.)  ** Update 2/8:  This works now, but I'm not sure how I fixed it...

McAfee does not make it easy to keep track of, or change, subscriptions from one computer to the next.

It will take over a week to upload my data to Mozy for backup (a great backup service once you’re up and running).

Sigh.  Once I get this system up and running, I’m sure I’ll make up all my lost time – probably on Monday.
