Is it time for a Family Newsletter?

I come from a pretty typical American family; 1 sibling, 2 step-siblings, Mom, Dad & Step-mom, and more cousins, aunts and uncles than I can count. Now I'm married and have 2 children; so do each of my siblings, my wife's brother, and many of my cousins. And we're all completely scattered across the country and across the various income and technology levels.

Is it time to start a family newsletter?

I read an article today on Brad Isaac's site (Achieve-IT) that highlights a free service for doing this, as well as some step-by-step instructions and some other good ideas.

I can't do this by myself; it'll take a commitment from quite a few family members to track down other family members' email addresses and to contribute news & pictures. And I'll have to get some help defining "family" – does someone related by 3 levels of marriage on one side care about what someone 3 levels out on the other is doing? Probably not.

Has anyone out there tried this before? If you have, or are about to, I'd love to hear your feedback.
