If you're like me you've been caught more than once in the traffic disaster that happens almost every day, but especially on Friday afternoons starting this time of year n I-17. The weather starts heating up and a nice weekend camping trip north of town sounds mighty tempting. Well, you're not the only one. At about one or two o'clock in the afternoon on Fridays the traffic on and around the I-17 alomst comes to a complete stop. I live east of the I-17 and so most of the time I get to see the traffic backed up onto the Loop 101 causing a traffic mess all the way to Cave Creek road sometimes. And the same goes for the other direction on the Loop 101. And for the I-17 itself, plan on slow traffic from about Union Hills until about Anthem, that's almost 15 miles!! But I guess that's the price you pay to have a nice enjoyable weekend in the cool country.
On the way home you're in for just about the same thing. I read an article a couple of days ago about some alternatives to the I-17 route back into Phoenix. None of them are a great solution, and they all add distance to the trip back into the valley, but if you just can't stand dealing with traffic and would rather drive a little bit further just to keep moving (sometimes that makes it feel like you've actually beat the masses), take a look at the article.
